The Devotional Diva - Well-Behaved Girls Can Too Make History!

Regarding those entering Heaven: “only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life” Rev. 20-17

I was driving home the other day and saw a bumper sticker, which conveyed this message: Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History. I started out by feeling very offended at that statement.

Then I started to think about it, of course I applied my own special brand of logic to my thoughts. I guess there is some truth to the phrase. Most of the women in the news today are there because of mischief or mayhem. Some with out any thought of how they will be remembered in life and why.

In contrast, some do make history for exceptional behavior. I thought about Rosa Parks as she quietly and with dignity, took a seat on a bus and the world has remembered her ever since.

I pondered over people who wanted to do big adventurous things so they would be remembered in history as a most influential person, a world leader, or a savior (and not the kind that died for me) of a culture. I must admit, it made me think about how I will be remembered long after I am gone.

I have no wealth or power, fame or global influence, so in all reality, I’ll settle for being the best me that God intended. I’ll be happy knowing that perhaps in some way my life meant something more for the cause of Christ than just attending church on Sunday (which is not a bad thing, I highly recommend it). I could say more, but that is the short version of my long-range life desire.

However, then I realized something I’d never thought of before, when Jesus comes back history will be no more! When Christ returns to claim the ones who believe on Him (well behaved or otherwise), everything we know on earth will pass away in favor of God’s favor – creating a new heaven and a new earth. The history books from the beginning of time will perish. So what is the point of being in them?

The question becomes this, why do people work so hard to be remembered in books that will one day perish and not be remembered at all? There are only two books I believe we need concern ourselves. They are The Bible and the Book of Life.

Those two books, in some manner, have existed since the beginning of time with God Himself. In fact, the Bible is God Himself! It tells “well-believed” women how to behave. In fact, it works for men as well!

Then there is the Book of Life, a sweet book which contains the names of all those who will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The requirement for having your name added here is not behavior, but rather belief. It’s the belief that Christ came and died for your sins and set you free!

I leave you with a challenge. Think about these two books more than any other book that you are reading today. Are you truly immersed in one and do you have your name in the other?

I leave you Christ’s own words: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have ever-lasting life!” John 3:16

Love, Barbara
