The Devotional Diva - I Rest My Case

"Righteous are You, O'Lord, that I would plead my case with You; indeed I would discuss matters of justice with you." Jeremiah 12:1 (NAS95)

My all-time favorite lawyers are Perry Mason and Ben Matlock. If I ever get into real trouble, I want them on my side. Fortunately, the need hasn’t materialized and hopefully never will!

The thing I like best about my heroes is that they really went to bat for their client. They went the extra mile to prove him/her innocent and powerfully plead their case in court. By the time they rested the case, you knew an innocent verdict was in the bag. That sure was good television.

However, when it comes to God – I can waive the right to an attorney. Sorry Perry!

Now that doesn’t mean I don’t have representation. The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with the Father. I like that. Sometimes, my pain is too deep to verbalize or the situation so overwhelming, that I stand before God at a loss for words. That’s when the Holy Spirit does what He does best – stand in the gap for me.

The Bible also says that Jesus lives to make intercession for us. He prays for us and He is our Advocate. I like that too. There is no better help than Judge's Son!

However, God likes to hear directly from us as well. Jeremiah 12:1 states we can come directly before the Father to plead our case before Him. Plead for deliverance. Plead for safety. Plead for forgiveness. Plead because we’ve been falsely accused or misused. Whatever the issue, you are allowed the privilege to plead your case, privately and personally before an Almighty God.

Now sometimes we handle our pleas pretty good. With a sincere heart, we take our requests before the heavenly courtroom. The hard part is leaving them there. Too often, we forget the handcuff key and leave the presence of God with our burden in tow.

This recently happened to me and for the life of me, I know better! I called out to my Lord, “Why do I keep mentally rehashing something I’ve already pleaded with you over? Help me – I am so incapable right now!”

The response was simply, “You made your plea – now you must rest your case!”

This is why God is God and I am not, I admit there are some things we should rightfully keep before the Father’s face. But there are some issues meant to be left for God’s grace to cover and remove from our way.

Interestingly enough, when we finally rest our case before Him, we can get some much-needed rest for our minds, bodies and souls.

Is there anything today you need to plead before the Father? If so, claim Jeremiah 12:1 – make your plea and then rest your case!

Resting comfortably,
Barbara
