Pocket Full of Quarters Trek 2009 – Touch Points What Is the Secret?
By Cheryle M. Touchton The Pocket Full of Quarters Lady Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Secret: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, Love your neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27 NIV
I’m not great at waiting on God. On missionary journeys, it usually takes a couple of days for God to start sending Divine Appointments and I must to confess to a little impatience. I’ve come to realize that maybe I need those days to separate myself from the rest of my life and get fully in the “missionary zone.” God must think I’m ready because today He turned on the proverbial “appointment” spigot. Thank God.
What a day. I’ll be in Philadelphia for about a week. Monday through Thursday, Gail and I are attending an amazing event called “Quantum Leap.” This event helps writers develop the skills and contacts necessary to take a “Quantum Leap” in the marketing of their writing and services. Pocket Full of Change board member Steve Harrison is the host of this amazing event and Steve generously made our attendance possible. Gail and I both felt like we were taking quantum leaps all day as we took copious notes.
At one point, I had to introduce myself and the book Pocket Full of Quarters. I mentioned that there was an ancient secret to everything that my Jewish friends called the Sh’ma and we Christians called the Greatest Commandment. Afterward, several people came up to me begging to know what this secret was. I was already overflowing with gratitude about what I was learning and when I realized that God was also using this event to send Divine Appointments, I could hardly contain my excitement.
A lovely young woman with long dark hair rushed over and said, “I need to know about this secret.”
I asked, “What is your religious background?”
“I’m Hindu,” she explained.
“This secret is part of the Christian and Jewish faith,” I explained. “Sh’ma means to hear and it starts with ‘Love the Lord your God.' I’m Christian and my God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” I went on to tell her why the secret was so important to me personally and about my personal relationship with God. I explained how to become a Christian. She wasn’t ready to ask Jesus to become a part of her life but I gave her a tract and Gail and I prayed for her over dinner.
Gail and I also spoke with a young man who was a Christian but no longer involved in church. Unfortunately, his church situation was not a pleasant one. It surprised him to hear how wonderful church could really be.
I said, “A good church is the closest thing to heaven you can find on earth and a bad church may be the closest thing to hell you can find on earth. After all, if you were Satan, where would you attack first?” Gail and I encouraged him to give church another try.
Two women asked for a meeting with us to help them discern God’s will for the next steps in their lives and speaking opportunities. Gail and I are meeting one tomorrow over breakfast and another over lunch.
Today was wonderful. Go to the Photo Gallery to see pictures of the event and to pray for the people at the event. I can’t wait for tomorrow. I know a secret that really, really works.
