Belle’s Musing – I Can’t Minister to Everyone

Every good and perfect gift is from above. James 1:17 NIV

I am Belle the Missionary Dog and God made me to be a gift to humans. Unfortunately, I can’t minister to everyone. The human world has two types of people - dog people and non-dog people. I can only help dog people.

Mommy’s friend Gail Golden didn’t used to be a dog person. When I first met Gail, she was polite but I knew that she was just being nice because she loved Mommy. I could smell a dog on her and was surprised. Most non-dog people don’t have dogs. I wondered what it would be like to have a Mommy who was a non-dog person.

Usually non-dog people stay non-dog people for their entire life. That means they miss everything I have to offer them. Not Gail. She met this dog person named Jem and suddenly everything changed. When Gail came to our house, she accepted my invitation to sit with her on the couch. I was actually able to make her laugh. I started spending more time with her and she seemed to enjoy it.

Gail traveled with us the first week of the 2009 Missionary Journey. I was miffed when she took my seat in the camper but she made up for it by letting me sit in her lap. I ministered to her as much as I did Mommy. She showed me other dogs on her computer and we laughed together. She even slipped me little pieces of food when Mommy wasn’t looking.

One morning I knew that Gail was an official dog person. I stood by her bed waiting for her to wake up. When she finally opened her eyes, she said, “Come on Belle.”

I happily jumped up and cuddled with her. I let her rub my tummy. When we shared a pillow, I knew it was official – Gail was a dog person. Only dog people will share a pillow with dogs.

Gail is much happier as a dog person. Being a dog person adds so much to human’s lives. Gail is so much mellower now. She enjoys things that she never knew she could enjoy. She married dog-person Jem and I heard her tell Mommy that their two dogs grieved her while she was gone. Some people are born dog people and others have to let us teach them.

Why is it that some humans choose to miss so many of the good and perfect gifts God offers? Don’t people know that God made dogs to be their very best friend?
