Pocket Full of Quarters Trek 2009 – Give ‘em Heaven Touch Point – Open the Floodgates
By Cheryle M. Touchton The Pocket Full of Quarters Lady
Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” Mal 3:10 NIV
For once in my life, I’m speechless to describe how I feel. I can only describe what happened. Pocket Full of Change Ministries joined Inside Out Ministries from Seattle, Washington to participate in Christ on the Mall. 13 of us, that included Bob, Barbara Gobbs, and me, staffed a booth on the mall right outside the Capital Building in Washington D.C. We had prayed for God to send people to our booth and He opened the floodgates of heaven.
We couldn’t keep up with the crowds of people who came in asking for help. We offered free “Bracelets With a Message.” These bracelets were simple leather bracelets with 5 plastic beads on them. As we tied them on, we explained that:
Gold: Stands for heaven. God offers it to everyone.
Black: Stands for the sin that separates us from God.
Red: Stands for the red blood of Jesus, spilled as a sacrifice for that sin.
White: Stands for how pure we become when we pray to receive Jesus
Green: Stands for the growth that happens after we receive Jesus as our Savior
Each team member in our own way, led person after person to pray to receive Jesus. Some made bracelets while others put then on wrists. Team members stood ready with tracts that explained the colors. We worked together as the mighty army of God that we were.
One entire family – Father, Mother, and son all prayed to receive Jesus. Each person who received Jesus had his or her own miraculous story of how they got to that moment in their lives. One aunt videotaped the salvation of her 13-year-old niece so her mother could see it later. Parents prayed with their children. Christian youth visiting the area in a group brought their fellow teammates or band members over to our booth to receive Jesus. We gave out Bibles, tracts, bracelets, and CD’s. We had the Gospel on CD in 77 languages and used many of them.
At one point, everyone was busy with someone. A police officer walked up and asked, “Who’s in charge here?” After about the third time he asked, it dawned on me that police officers were probably not used to being ignored.
“Who’s in charge here?” he asked again.
“I don’t suppose you’d accept the answer, God?” I answered tentatively.
“Oh….” he stumbled. “I guess He’s ultimately in charge but I need to see your permit.”
“I don’t know where it is but…”
“Don’t tell me you can’t find it,” he interrupted. “That answer won’t do.”
“I’m not in charge,” I laughed. “I can assure you we have a permit. I just don’t know where it is.”
“I know exactly where it is,” said team member Gary. “I’ll get it.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. I didn’t relish jail time and couldn’t afford a fine.
We ended tonight with a Bible Study and intense prayer time, praying for tomorrow. July 4th crowds are expected to be several times higher than today.
Open the floodgates again dear Lord.
