Pocket Full of Quarters Trek 2009 – Give ‘em Heaven Belle’s Musing – God’s GPS
By Belle Touchton – The Missionary Dog Mommy – Cheryle Touchton - The Pocket Full of Quarters Lady Black Mountain, North Carolina
What a God! His road stretches straight and smooth. Every God-direction is road-tested. Everyone who runs toward Him makes it. Ps 18:30 The Message
Mommy has no sense of direction. Daddy says it isn’t that she has no sense of direction. He says her sense of direction is opposite. If Mommy says turn left, we all know to turn right.
I’ll be sitting peacefully sleeping in the front seat and Mommy will say, “Belle, where are we?” I jump up and try to help, but let’s face it, I was bred to herd sheep, not campers.
Navigation got better when we got a GPS but here in the mountains, we lose our signal a lot. Tom Tom also has a hard time finding campgrounds. He doesn’t get lost as much as Mommy but he gets lost enough to worry us both. Telling us to, ”Turn right now!”when we are on the side of a cliff doesn’t do much for his credibility.
Gail, Barbara, and Daddy have traveled with us at various times during the last few weeks. They somehow know things that my Mommy doesn’t know. They can walk out of a grocery store and remember which way we were going before we parked to go into the store. They can even remember the way back when we go somewhere. They can find their way back to the camper when they walk to the camp store – but so can I. Poor Mommy just wanders around asking for directions.
Mommy tries to argue with people about which way to go. She asks silly things like, “Are you sure?”
“Trust me – turn left NOW,” Barbara insists firmly.
Daddy usually drives so when Mommy argues with him about directions, he doesn’t even bother to answer her.
Gail just sighs and says, “Cheryle, just pay more attention to your surroundings. Notice things when you turn in.” For Gail, hope springs eternal. She loves Mommy too but she is in denial if she thinks Mommy is going to get any better at this in this life. I figured out a long time ago that my mommy is good at many things but finding her way around isn’t one of them. Sometimes you just have to accept the things you cannot change.
I think it’s God’s idea of a practical joke to tell Mommy to drive 25,000 miles a year and not give her a sense of direction. The fact that Mommy always gets to where she needs to go just proves God’s directions really are road tested and that everyone who turns to Him makes it. I’m just glad Mommy tries so hard to listen to God because she would be lost without Him – in more ways than one.
Nonetheless, Barbara is leaving soon and it will be a while before we see Gail, Barbara, or Daddy again. I’m a little worried. Mommy will only have God, the GPS, and me. We’ve already established that I don’t herd campers. Tom Tom doesn’t like North Carolina mountains and I don’t want to spend the rest of my life wandering North Carolina. Does God’s GPS ever lose its signal?
