The Devotional Diva - The Door

The Devotional Diva - The Door By Barbara Gobbs Executive Assistant and Ministry Partner - Pocket Full of Change Ministries
“I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved.” Jesus in John 10:9 (NAS95)
Who doesn’t like to sightsee? I love it but while in Washington DC I wasn’t afforded a large amount of time to play tourist. Although during my breaks, I managed to stick my head in a few of the museums that lined the Mall. I guess where there is a will and a woman, there will be a way! Now our ministry booth was located between the Air and Space Museum and the National Art Gallery. Some of the older more distinguished Smithsonian buildings were close in proximity as well.
Those older buildings had the most incredible doors. They were large doors constructed of thick wooden slates, molded to fit the arched doorway in which they stood. Cast iron hinges and door levers adorned these massive entryways.
The Air and Space Museum had modern glass doors appropriate for the building, which housed items like the Apollo 12 Lunar Module and the Spirit of St. Louis airplane.
Then I discovered the National Art Gallery. Now I’m not much of an art buff, but occasionally used their facilities. Upon my first visit, I climbed a few dozen steps to discover huge leather clad doors. I’ve never seen leather doors before. They were magnificent. I preferred them to some of the art I saw.
To accommodate the large number of guests that visit, there were several doors by which you could enter. You could take the left, the right or the center door. This was common in all the buildings tourists frequented. The doors really made an impression.
Now let’s fast forward to Sunday morning July 5th at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria. This church hosted our group during our stay in Washington DC. With excitement and out of respect for all they had done, Cheryle and I attended this church for Sunday services.
Now God just loves playing with me, because the pastor brought us a message that morning on doors. Well, it was actually on one door – a divine door. He reminded us that Jesus told the people He was the Door.
Pastor Davidson elaborated on Jesus being the single door of salvation. He is the only way. There is no door number two or three with Christ. I wish you all could have heard the sermon that morning. Even though I walked through that door in 1982, I still love to hear the story of my Savior and the Door He is for the world – even today.
But it also reminded me there are lots of doors we walk through each day. Sometimes we barge through doors without thinking and get embarrassed. Other times we smash into doors that are locked and can’t figure out why. Then there are doors standing wide open. So what do we do? Most often we sit and stare – wondering “what if?”
Doors are such funny things. Honestly, I wish I understood them better. They open up to let us in and they close to keep us out. Sometimes, they open but only for a season. When do I go in and when do I stay out? If I walk through, how can I tell if and when I need to leave and walk through another door? I guess sometimes we learn by trial and error. But when a door smacks you in the face or elsewhere, it can be painful.
But one thing I know for sure, unless I first walk through the Door of Christ, I’ll never even come close to figuring it out. Once I walk through that one, narrow and holy door – my Savior will help me with all the other doors of life. I know I’ll not always get it right. When that happens, the Father will take my hand and gently guide me back on track toward the right door for the day.
I could go on and on but I leave you with a simple thought for the morning. Have you past through the door of Christ? Ask yourself that every time you pass through a door today. If you have entered into the presence of God through the Door, then just praise Him for it. Continue to seek His guidance for dealing with all the other doors of your life. If not, give me a call!
He’s knocking! Barbara
