Gail-Friends What I Want To Be When I Grow Up By Gail Griner Golden Publicist and Ministry Partner - Pocket Full of Change Ministries
They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing. Psalm 92:14
In our congregation, Magen David Messianic Synagogue, we are blessed to have two wonderful octogenarians: David who is 85, and Alice, 81. They met and married less than two years ago, and I marvel at their willingness to take such a risk at their advanced age. I’m just glad they did, because they are a powerful force as a couple.
Even though Dave has a hearing problem, and Alice is legally blind, working together they are unstoppable. This couple lets no grass grow beneath their feet. Rising early, exercising, and eating right are priorities. They take car trips every few months and always have new adventures to share with us. Both have a goal to live another 30 years. David wants to be the oldest surviving World War II vet. Since he survived being wounded on the beach at Normandy, I tend to believe he will meet that goal. I hope to attend his 115th birthday party. (I’ll only be 88 then!)
While many have excuses for not attending weekly services, Alice and Dave are the first to arrive (rain or shine) to assist us in our preparations. Recently Rabbi Jem announced a work day to help a local family repair their home which had been damaged by a huge water leak. Alice and Dave were the first to raise their hands to help. They were one of the first to arrive on the work day, and worked just as hard and long as our younger members.
Dave is extremely quick-witted. His dry humor pops up in every conversation and he has the knack of being able to turn every subject into an excuse for a joke. Alice is a vivacious, beautiful lady, always fashionably dressed and made up like a movie star. Both love the Lord and honor Him with their words and actions.
Dave and Alice embody Psalm 92:14 because they are flourishing and bearing fruit in their old age. We tell them they are the perfect role models for our congregation, and Rabbi Jem and I both want to be just like them when we grow up.
