Gail-Friends – My Prayer Mentor By Gail Golden Publicist and Ministry Partner - Pocket Full of Change Ministries
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19 KJV)
Have you ever read a book that changed your life? I have read many, but one stand out above all.
As a young Christian in my twenties, I read a book that changed my prayer life: The Biography of George Mueller. Since then, I have read the book many times, and given it as a gift to others. I consider George to be my mentor on prayer.
George Mueller, who lived in the 1800’s was greatly impacted himself by his own prayer mentor who inspired him to start orphanages. During his lifetime, George cared for ten thousand orphans and trusted God, through prayer alone, to provide for their needs. God answered Mueller’s prayers abundantly by providing over seven million dollars for their care during Mueller’s ministry.
Mueller kept meticulous records of each prayer, recording the need, the date the prayer began, and the date the prayer was answered. He never sought funding through letters or speeches. He sought the funds on his knees in prayer.
The story that impressed me most about his life recorded the day he and his wife ran completely out of food and money. Mr. Mueller sat at the table, bowed his head in prayer and asked His Lord to provide the needed food, rejoicing in His faithful promise to provide. He raised his head. A knock came on the door. He opened it to find a friend with boxes of food. God not only provided, He had been working on the request before George spoke the prayer. The stories of Mueller’s answered prayers inspired me to begin my own prayer journal. For over 30 years, I have recorded my prayers and have seen amazing answers. Some answers were immediate, like the time I went to a garage sale, praying to find a rice cooker. As I stepped out of the car, I spotted one on the table right in front of me. Some might think it silly to ask for such a trivial thing, but I learned from my mentor George Muller to ask my Father for everything I needed. Other prayers, like the prayer I asked for my daughters, have taken years. As infants, I prayed for both of them to have good husbands who would love them the way Yeshua loved the church. Those prayers took over 30 years to be answered, but they were answered in a beautiful, wonderful way. Both of my sons in law are men who love and obey God, and love my daughters with sacrificial love.
Oh, how I thank God for His answers and for His timing. Many prayers I thought would be answered in a certain way, did not turn out as requested. Those stories would fill a book. One example is when I prayed not to lose a job I loved. God’s answer was “no.” I felt disappointed and confused but over time, I saw how that job loss provided the springboard to a whole career better than I could have dreamed.
George Mueller taught me to take every request to God and to keep a record. This is important, because we as humans forget. At times we think God has forgotten about our prayers. A written record encourages our faith. Perhaps that’s why God repeatedly tells us in His Word to remember His works.
His works in my life have been mighty. He has proved His love and faithfulness hundreds, no thousands of times. My faith has been built over years of proof that He will meet my needs and I am so thankful I am His child. I am also thankful for my prayer mentor, George Mueller.
