Pocket Full of Quarters Trek 2012 Glad to Be Alive
By Cheryle M. Touchton The Pocket Full of Quarters Lady
Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Rev 1:17-18 NIV
Halleluiah, the Camper Van, does not like wind and it is often windy on western Interstate highways. I know to keep both hands on the wheel and not to over compensate when gusts of wind blow Halleluiah right or left.
I had just entered New Mexico and was driving the 70 mile an hour speed limit. Bob was on the speakerphone when suddenly a gust of wind reached out, grabbed Halleluiah, and pulled us first into the emergency lane and then into the grass. The ridges in the emergency lane grabbed the tires and made matters worse. I yelped as I held the steering wheel and waited until the wind released us and let me take control of Halleluiah. It took 3-4 seconds of steering right and left across road, ridges, and grass before I was safely back in my lane. It was the closest call I’ve had on the road in all of my years of driving.
“Don’t worry Bob,” I said, breathing deeply to slow my heart down. “I’m OK.”
When he didn’t answer, I slowed down and carefully picked up the phone with my shaking hands. Bob and I had been disconnected. It took a few seconds to get him back again.
“I’m glad you’re alive,” he said, after hearing the entire story.
“Me too,” I answered. I was glad to still be on earth but Bob and I both knew that because of Christ, I’d have been alive no matter what.
