Travel Tip: Wal-Mart Supercenters
I'm not much of a shopper. My version of shopping is to decide what I need, to find a store that makes it quick and easy, and to run in and run out. The job I had required suits. I always bought them from the same place. I knew where their clothes were, how they fit, and what price to expect. I knew they traveled well and would last. I can buy 3 suits in less than 30 minutes and am relieved to be out of the store.
The one exception to my aversion to shopping is costume jewelry. I have a weakness for dramatic and whimsical costume jewelry. I will go anywhere that carries my style of jewelry.
My daughter loves shopping. When she was a teenager, I figured out that shopping with her would give me quality time with my daughter. When I complained to my female friends, they didn't feel sorry for me. Trust me when I tell you it was a sacrifice given from a mother's love.
My daughter kept telling me how awesome Wal-Mart Supercenters were. I've always liked Wal-Mart and certainly go in my local store whenever I need something. I couldn't imagine how a superstore could be "awesome." After all, wasn't the only difference a grocery store? They don't carry my style of costume jewelry so I couldn’t imagine that I would find them anything other than useful. I was afraid that they were so large, I would not be able to find anything.
On this trip, I have fallen in love with Wal-Mart Supercenters. They have everything. In the last 2 weeks, I've bought clothes, food, medicine, and camping supplies. They have nice people willing to help me find what I need. Their aisles are well marked. They have plenty of active checkout counters so I don't have to wait in line. They even have a place to get your hair cut. I've found myself looking forward to my visits to Wal-Mart Super Stores.
When the person who checked me in to my current hotel said she worked at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter, I perked right up. I love business and am always intrigued by good business models. Wal-Mart intrigues me.
Most stores make you chose between price and convenience. If you get a lower price, you usually have to forgo good service. Today, I watched a person training some new Wal-Mart employees. She was being kind and thorough. They have made finding the cleaning supplies convenient for their employees. They have created a business model that gives employees a pleasant place to work. They keep good employees who in turn are very helpful and well trained.
They understand how busy people are and they have created a store where you can go and get everything you need. While I do not plan to buy my suits from there, I do plan to honor their successful business model with my patronage. Maybe I should send them my resume.
