Sometimes You Don't Know What You Do Know
Sometimes You Don't Know What You Do Know

I've always heard the expressions that "You don't know what you don't know."

On this journey, I've found that sometimes you don't know what you do know.

I was trying to start a fire by my campsite. My hands were freezing and I wanted it quickly. Everyone around me had successful fires roaring. The kindling was large and I couldn't get it started. I put cardboard and paper on it and nothing worked.

Then I remembered that I had been a Girl Scout. I had a memory teaching younger Girl Scouts how to start outdoor fires. I remembered a badge for starting fires. As I cleared away the cobwebs, I remembered a Tee Pee with the kindling under the logs. I had my fire roaring shortly.

The camera battery charger plug kept coming out of the socket. I kept putting it back in. Bob suggested that I squeeze the prongs together. Naturally it worked and they stayed in. He smiled in that loving way husbands have when they have just taught their wife something. He said, "You just learned something." I laughed and said, "Actually, I used to know that."

I kept struggling with cleaning the grill and pots from outdoor cooking. The paper towels I kept using just fell apart. They wouldn't clean it. I bought a sponge with a scrub brush on the back. Amazing.

In every hotel, I kept losing the room key and my car keys. If you put them together on the table closest to the door, you always know where they are. I traveled for a living. I've practiced that for years.

It is summer. I ought to be able to wear shorts. I kept putting on shorts. I even told my daughter to bring shorts. States like Washington, Montana, Wyoming, and Northern California are often too cold for shorts. I have been there before and I knew that. Jackets are a good idea.

Did I mention that it is important to pay attention to where you park your car?

How about charging batteries before you need them?

Life on the road is interesting but it can be confusing. I've always heard that your brain has room for about 7 things at a time. If the 8th thing enters it, the brain randomly throws out something. I think that may be true.
