Biblical Tips On Relationships: A Heart of Flesh
Do you need a new heart and a new spirit in your relationships? If you really want to know the answer this question, ask your spouse or your roommate. If they refuse to incriminate themselves for fear of personal safety, you should be worried.
Check the state of your heart. Are you often angry? Are you feeling indifferent to someone you used to love? Do people you used to enjoy irritate you? Have you stopped enjoying activities that used to delight you? Have you pulled back from people who encourage and push you spiritually? Are you critical of the people closest to you? Have you stopped feeling emotions and gone on “auto pilot?”
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are well on your way to a heart of stone. You and your relationships are suffering. Turn to God and ask for help! Ezekiel 36:26: I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (NIV)
Yes - people do fail us and injure our hearts Example: Esau’s heart of stone Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob." (NIV)
But God can fill in the gaps and restore our hearts and relationships. Example: Esau’s heart of flesh. But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. NIV
For today, every time something irritates, disappoints, hurts, bores, or frustrates you, pray this prayer: God, please give me a new heart and put a new spirit in me. Remove my heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh.
