Pocket Full of Hurricanes
Written by Dot in Old Town Florida
Hurricanes are not new to us as we lived in Dade County from 1956 to 1972. We clearly remember hurricane Donna. She prompted my husband to make permanent window coverings for all our windows. We store these in the ceiling of our garage. This house has one huge window that would be a problem to replace so papa made a three part cover that fits together like a puzzle. Our problem is that we are too weak these days to put the puzzle up or even help anyone who could. It is a two-man job. Young men at that!
I thought about what to do and that “wee small voice” said to call Gary. Gary was just finishing lunch before leaving town and said he would be over after he and his wife finished lunch. How considerate can one be? They were running to Michigan to escape the storm but would first put up our shutter.
Remember the part about a two man job? We called our closest neighbor who only visits his property once or twice a month. He too was almost ready to leave. He was going down to Largo to lock up and head for a shelter down there. Again, he said he would have time before leaving and would help put the shutter up. Aren't these beautiful people?
That “wee small, gentle voice,” the Holy Spirit, speaks to us often and we must learn to listen. Frances left our front yard covered with small branches, leaves and gobs of Spanish moss. We lost two sheds that house our garden tools and work trailers. Two huge trees fell and crushed both sheds. We feel blessed that the house was spared.
As the trees all around us swayed violently from the winds and rain I felt safe knowing God was watching over us. I pray for all those in the path of Ivan.
The water is a blessing, but a tad too much at one time. God be with you. Dot
