Biblical Tips On Relationships: A Homesick Soul
Are you restless in your relationships? Are you hard on those around you? You may have a homesick soul.
Seek more of God instead of new and improved relationships. I met a woman waiting for the return of her husband and only son. We stood at the base of a sheer cliff watching her husband and son risk their lives for the sake of recreation. “This is their second time. I climbed it the first time with them and will never do it again. I don’t get it.” I agreed and asked if she was praying for them. “Oh, I don’t believe in God,” she said matter-of-factly. “I guess you could say that I’m an agnostic.”
“What do you mean by agnostic?” I asked.
“I’m just not sure there is any proof that there is a God.” As her beloved family struggled to get to the next level of the cliff, she joked, “But feel free to pray for them.”
“Aha,” I quipped back. “So you do admit there might be someone to pray to.” That led to a long discussion about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. After hearing her intellectual reasons for her non-belief, I asked if she experienced restlessness in her life and relationships. She admitted that she did.
“I sometimes wonder what is wrong with me. It seems like I have everything I need.” In listening to her life, I agreed. “I find myself being too hard on my husband and friends. I should appreciate them and all I seem to be able to do is complain.”
“Where do you go when you are seeking answers to problems?” I asked.
“Books, friends, and counseling,” was the answer.
“Do they help?” I probed.
“Sometimes.” She paused and admitted, “No, not really.’
“What if God really is the answer to your restlessness? What if you are never going to find the peace you seek until you accept Him into your life? If you suspected that, would you be willing to seek Him?” I asked. She grew quiet. She admitted that she had never intellectually opened the door to a belief in God. “At least, take a look,” I beseeched.
This woman has a homesick soul. He soul seeks a home through the people around her and the intellect of the world. Her restlessness manifests itself in dissatisfaction with the ones she loves most. Truth is truth. She will never find the answers she seeks without the love of Jesus Christ in her life. Gen 4:14 NIV Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.
Deut 28:64-66 The Message You'll worship all kinds of other gods, gods neither you nor your parents ever heard of, wood and stone no-gods. But you won't find a home there, you'll not be able to settle down. GOD will give you a restless heart, longing eyes, a homesick soul.
