GailFriends - Wisdom

“Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and call understanding your kinsman.”
Proverbs 7: 4

Last week, I talked about my friend Jesus. Today, I want to tell you about my friend “wisdom.” The Bible is the wisdom of God revealed. Have you ever thought how blessed we are to have a guidebook for life on earth? God, in His mercy, left us instructions! I don’t know about you, but I need help. Life is often hard, and I struggle. Over the years I’ve learned, through trial and error, that God’s way is the best way. To find the wisdom I need, I must turn to the Word of God.

About ten years ago, I began to study the book of Proverbs, and have come to look on these pearls of wisdom as a dear friend. Since the book contains 31 chapters, I read the chapter corresponding to the day. For instance on the first, I read chapter one. The impact on my life has been tremendous and it is amazing how I am still learning more every time I read them. Each time I read the chapter, a verse seems to stand out to me. Often, the verse relates to something going on in my life at that point and gives me guidance for decisions. God’s Word is alive and I see it in my Bible study sessions. If you’ve never experienced this, I promise you will through studying Proverbs.

The Proverbs give instruction on a multitude of topics including friendship, courtship, marriage, parenting, business, and even farming. I discovered this when I planted a garden last year and noticed how many references there were to “garden” wisdom. Why, even today (in Proverb 10: 5), I read “He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.” Here in Florida, I often see citrus trees with fruit rotting away on the ground. This verse speaks to me, not just about my garden, but about the opportunities God gives me to serve Him. I don’t want them to be wasted and cause My Lord shame.

I am amazed at my Lord’s care for us when I study the Old Testament. He left detailed instructions about seemingly minor things, which shows His deep, fatherly love for us.

God’s Word has been preserved over thousands of years, and we are a blessed generation to have it so readily accessible. Past generations never had whole Bibles small enough to fit in their hands or in a pocket. They couldn’t listen to the Bible on tape or CD or MP3 as we do today. I pray I never take that for granted.

I call God’s wisdom my friend. The Bible is the mind, and heart, and will of God in print. By reading it, I find the wisdom I need to fulfill God’s call on my life. Oh, how I delight in spending time with my friend.
