GailFriends - Celebrating Sukkot By Gail Golden Publicist and Ministry Partner - Pocket Full of Change Ministries
My husband Rabbi Jem Golden is a Messianic Rabbi. Together, we lead a Jewish congregation who knows the Messiah (Yeshua) has come. We worship in the traditional Jewish fashion, and this week, we are celebrating Sukkot. Also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, this Jewish holiday helps us remember God’s faithfulness, protection, and provision. During the forty years of wandering in the desert after leaving Egypt, the Jews lived in shelters called sukkahs (booths or tabernacles). Over all of those many years, God faithfully met their daily needs for food, shelter and water. What awesome and amazing miracles God did for them.
Each year, in obedience to Leviticus 23:34-43, we build a three-sided shelter, called a sukkah. We leave the shelter up for seven days, and eat our meals in it each day. Our sukkah is built of bamboo, and the roof is covered with tree branches, through which we can see the moon and the stars at night. We remember that the children of Israel, though exposed to the elements, were protected and provided for by their God. We talk about the ways God has taken care of us over the past year. We sing, we dance, we blow the shofar and we praise God for His faithfulness. It is a happy, joyful time that we look forward to each year.
I do not believe it is a coincidence that Sukkot is happening right now, during a tremendous financial crisis in our world. God is reminding us that He is able to take care of His people. As I lay in the sukkah and look out through the bamboo branches, I remember how faithful He was to His loved ones. I think how He will take care of us right now. The sukkah is a tangible reminder of God’s love and faithfulness, especially at such a time as this. It is comforting to remember, and I am thankful to my Heavenly Father.
